Faces of our Faith: Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego – 11:00 AM
Faces of our Faith: Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego - 11:00 AM Service
April 19, 2020 - Faces of Our Faith by FUMC Killeen

By refusing to bow down to the king's golden idol, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego went directly against authority, against what others thought they were supposed to do, in favor of what God directly told them to do. Following what they knew was right, they were thrown into the fiery furnace, so hot that the people outside immediately burned up and died. But they did not burn. They were not alone. The three men came out unscathed, and the Lord's protection of them stunned the king so much, that he commanded everyone to worship the one who protected these men, even into the depths of a burning furnace.

As the women leave the empty tomb, filled with shock and breathless joy, they begin a new journey. In these moments, their personal wilderness blooms with beauty and promise. As Easter people, the journey for us never ends. With the Spirit guiding us forward, we celebrate the glimpses of resurrection sprouting up in the dry and cracked spaces of our lives.

Feeling stuck or depressed, navigating a failing marriage or working a job you hate, living with illness or chronic pain - these are all valleys of dry bones. In these spaces, we pray for God's breath to rattle us toward becoming whole. The story of Lazarus reminds us of the wilderness of grief, as Martha's response to her brother's death captures the way she too, might protest death, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
