Good morning Church,

Christmas is coming, and that means it is time to start thinking about our Walk through Bethlehem and our Living Nativity performances. For the last 5 years it has been my honor and privilege to serve as the coordinator for these events, and so I will continue in that role this year. Each year I learn from the previous year in an effort to make things more efficient and make the performance more meaningful for everyone who attends. With that, I have made a few adjustments to the program.

The following are the performance dates:

2 December: Walk through Bethlehem (6pm to 8pm)
3 December: Living Nativity Performance (6:30pm – 7:30pm)
9 December: Living Nativity Performance (6:30pm – 7:30pm)
10 December: Living Nativity Performance (5pm – 6pm)

Walk through Bethlehem

This is the program that will require the most people to be successful.

We have 11 Stations that guests can visit to learn about life in Bethlehem before Jesus arrival.

Those stations are:
1 – Tax Collector,
2 – Jewish Home,
3 – Jewish Synagogue,
4 – Potter’s Shop,
5 – Perfumery,
6 – Market Place,
7 – Ladies at the well,
8 – Inn,
9 – Jewish Food Station,
10 – Fishermen by the creek,
11 – Empty Manger.

In addition to the stations, we will need people to just be villagers walking around and greeting visitors.

Each station will tell the story of life in Bethlehem – I will have pre-prepared cards that will tell you what to say when people visit. We will need multiple people at each station to make it feel authentic.

One key difference this year is we are not going to have tour guides, so we are going to let people walk through the park at their own pace.

We are only going to have 2 practices for the Walk through Bethlehem:
18 November: 10 am to 12pm
30 November: 6pm to 7:30pm

The Living Nativity

The Living Nativity will require the most practice. However, THERE ARE NO LINES TO LEARN. All the lines are pre-recorded, what will make the performance work best is knowing your movements and getting the timing of the story line down.

The Living Nativity will require fewer participants, but we will have more practices. The story unfolds in four scenes:

Scene One – Angel visits Mary,
Scene Two – Three Wise Men visit Herod,
Scene Three – Angel visits the Shepherds,
Scene Four – The Birth of Christ.

For this performance to work we will need people to fill the following roles:

Scene One (4 people)

Angel – (Male Voice)
Mary
Elizabeth
Joseph

Scene Two: (9 people)

Wise Men – (3)
Villager – (Male Voice)
Herod
Chief Priest – (Male Voice)
Scribes – (3)

Scene Three (4+ people)

Shepherds – (3)
Angel – Female Voice
Choir – (?)

Scene Four (5+ people)

Mary – From Scene One
Joseph – From Scene One
Carpenter – (Male Voice)
Innkeeper – (Male Voice)
Innkeeper’s wife
Inn Guests – (5-10)

The following is the practice for the Living Nativity:

Scene 1 Practice:
18 November: 11:30 am to 12:30pm
28 November: 6pm to 8pm (I’ll supply pizza for dinner)

Scene 2 Practice:
18 November: 1:30pm to 2:30pm
28 November: 6pm to 8pm (I’ll supply pizza for dinner)

Scene 3 Practice:
28 November: 6pm to 8pm (I’ll supply pizza for dinner)

Scene 4 Practice:
18 November: 12:30pm to 1:30pm
28 November: 6pm to 8pm (I’ll supply pizza for dinner)

I am scheduling 1 hour for each scene. I would like to go through each scene multiple times.

This is always an incredible way to start the Christmas season, and I look forward to working with all of you to make this year the best ever.

God Bless,
Bryan Charlton
